Overqualified How To Talk About It.
Overqualified How To Talk About It.Overqualified How To Talk About It.The harsh reality of age discrimination is that it isnt just for those in their 40s, 50s, and 60s anymore. Age discrimination is starting at younger and younger levels. PBS recently reported that jobseekers are feeling the pushback starting at age 35.You can consider yourself fortunate if you hear, Youre overqualified. Thats because if someone says these words directly to you, theyre giving you the opportunity to counter that perception. This is a better scenario than being perceived as overqualified, but only hearing radio silence in response to your resume.Being overqualified is often code for, We dont really want to pay you what we anticipate youll be asking for, based on all the experience youre bringing to the table. The interviewer may express overqualification in any number of ways, for example, framing it under the guise of the organization has so much new technology (that mature workers arent expected t kn ow how to use. The interviewer may ask say, We have state-of-the-art systems here. Would you be able to jump right in? Or the interviewer may attempt make you think hes giving you a compliment, by saying, Well, we think youd be a big fish in a small pond with us. That still means you bring a lot of experience to the table and they dont really want to pay you. Lets talk about what to say in these scenariosExpress your enthusiasm for the job and pride in your qualifications. There may be a tendency to want to downplay your experience in order to fit into what that particular organization needs avoid that. What comes off as more authentic is when you explain what makes you interested in this position at this point in your career. Whats important here is articulating a true reason why why that company, why right now, and why you.The interviewer wants to hear whats in it for the organization first. Therefore, start with why youre interested in that particular company at this moment in time. Use Google News to learn the latest things theyre working on, and talk about why thats of interest to you. Then explain how 1 or 2 elements of your expertise strongly apply to the organization at this moment.Overcome the myth of a digital divide. Its important to fight the perception that your skills and knowledge might not be on the cutting edge. Theres no excuse today to not having technology skills. If you have recent successes, Give examples of projects youve done which required computer skills and familiarity with electronic media.Additionally, update your skills by spending productive time on the Internet. Stay up to date with technological trends. Learn what you need to know for your next role by tapping into Youtube, Udemy, or Coursera, where you will learn, almost literally, anything and everything under the sun. Then emphasize this training youve taken to keep your skills up to date. This way, your answer to the technology question will be a resounding, yes you are a daptable and tech-savvy.Be a team player. Youll almost never hear me recommend that you emphasize your team skills. Thats because 99% of the time, saying youre a team player is nothing but filler and it rarely communicates anything valuable. However, for a mature worker who faces dealing with teams of professional peers who are younger, its important to discuss recent work experiences in which age diversity has been an asset.Explain that you believe your age and experience would be beneficial, you are eager to learn, and it doesnt matter who helps you. Make sure the interviewer walks away with the feeling that you are at ease working with people of all ages.Age discrimination is rampant, but it need not be the final nail in the coffin. Make sure to exude confidence in what you bring to the table, and make sure to balance that out so it doesnt seem arrogant. There are employers who value age and experience and will pay you accordingly and when you present yourself using these strat egies, its a win-win for everyone

6 Alternatives to Coffee Dates at Work- The Muse
6 Alternatives to Coffee Dates at Work- The Muse6 Alternatives to Coffee Dates at Work- The MuseSure, youre friendly at work. You say a quick hello as you pass colleagues desks and smile during meetings. And- thats pretty much it.You see your co-workers every day, but how well do you actually know them? Spoiler Not really at all. Does it matter? Actually, it does. Because building relationships at works increases happiness and productivity. You first idea for fixing this may be grabbing coffee togetherbei, but in all honesty, you really dont want to. At best, you find a table and mostly hear the other person while you sip a $5 latte. At worst, you wait in line, stand in a corner, shout, and if youre on a budget or dont really like coffee, feel like youre wasting time and money. Listen, if your main goal is to step outside the office and grab a latte- dont let me stop you. By all means, go for it and while youre at it, invite a colleague to come along. But if youre goal is to actually get to know the other person, choose one of these less predictable options.1. Ask Him or zu sich a Random QuestionThink fast What are three things you discuss with your colleagues? If you answered work, the weather, and lunch, you need some fresh topics.A quick internet search can yield some quirky and random questions, like, What TV host would you want to interview you? Or, If you could have a picnic on any mountaintop in the world, where would you go? Personally, I like this list of questions. Try using these as ice breakers. Itll get you out of your shells and help you connect.2. Get Some Fresh AirStarbucks isnt the only destination outside of your office walls. So, skip the coffee, and schedule your next meeting outside the office. Better yet, invite a colleague to join you on your next walk. Just a small change of scenery can bring with it a welcome change of perspective. Its a double win to see the local neighborhood, especially if you dont live close to your office. And hey, even if your walk just involves the parking lot, its still a different meeting view than usual.3. Celebrate BirthdaysThis is a way to bond with all of your colleagues- after all, everyone has a birthday Its easy just take five minutes to approach someone on her special day and wish her well. If you work together closely, bring a small token like a balloon or cupcake and strike up a conversation about how she celebrates. Even a card goes a long way. 4. Find Shared HobbiesLove The Bachelor, like me? Odds are some of your colleagues do, too. If you find out who, youll have an instant conversation starter and find yourselves in the break room- or on Slack- every Tuesday morning rehashing the most ridiculous moment of last nights episode. From there, it wont seem so out of blue to send the other person a message, and youll start to really open the lines of communication. Seriously, sharing your hobbies- no matter how quirky you may think they are- can help you learn a lot about each othe r5. Mix Up Your CommunicationDo you always communicate with your colleagues the exact same way? Is your go-to email, or meeting in person, or chatting on the phone? Whatever it is, this week, plan to mix it up.For example, do you have a co-worker who is pop culture obsessed? Respond to his next great idea with a positive GIF. For the person whos always on Twitter, tweet some praise. Obviously, you shouldnt respond to your anfhrer with a series of emojis- but feel free to get creative when its appropriate.6. Start an Article ClubI love going to bookstores and seeing the newest it novel sitting pristinely on the shelf, or reading book reviews online. But taking the next step and actually reading is a different story, which is why I rarely join book clubs. An easier commitment for me was an article club, where people agree on a quick read on a common interest topic and then discuss it over lunch. Its fun, easy to plan, and wont leave you staying up late at night when youre in desperate need of some shuteye. All of these options cost less than five dollars, take less than 30 minutes, and are more exciting than a traditional coffee date. So, give them a shot and watch your relationships with your co-workers blossom.Photo of happy co-workers courtesy of Shutterstock.

Build a Long Master Resume, Then Cut, Cut, Cut
Build a Long Master Resume, Then Cut, Cut, CutBuild a Long Master Resume, Then Cut, Cut, CutBuild a Long Master Resume, Then Cut, Cut, CutYou have years of work experience many years, in fact. Youve racked up plenty of accomplishments with several employers, and even won a few awards. But when you put all of that into a resume, youre left with a document thats well over the strongly suggested 1-to-2 page length.Should you keep it all or cut some? The answer (surprise) Keep it allWhuh?? you say. What gives? I thought employers only wanted to see one- or two-page resumes Even you guys at say soThats right, we do. But you can keep that three- or four-page document as a master resume, so you have a record of every little and not-so-little skill or accomplishment that might look good to a prospective employer. You never send a master resume to an employer rather, you use it as the starting point for creating the resumes you will send. So, when you see a job posting you like, take your fruch twein relevant skills from your master resume and put them together for a 1- to 2-page resume that targets the skills and qualifications the employer is seeking for that job.Heres a practical example. Lets say youre a Technology Specialist and accomplished the following in your most recent positionMigrated 100 desktop PCs from Windows 98 to Windows XP two weeks ahead of schedule.Devised and implemented a ticketing system to triage technology stab und sttze requests, producing a 25% increase in end-user satisfaction.Researched user requirements and wrote 12 requests for proposal (RFPs) for hardware and software purchases.Managed 10-person technology support and development staff.Implemented and executed a rigorous software testing regimen to ensure compatibility with information architecture.Organized and delivered seven best practices presentations to other IT professionals within the corporation.Initiated division-wide Green IT program to reduce utility expenses and properly dispos e of unneeded technology assets.Organized and led regular meetings with groups of end users to discuss technology issues. You have eight bulleted items on your master resume. Now, lets say you find a posting for an IT Manager that emphasizes the following skills and qualificationsSolid and proven communication skills, especially with end users.Strong project management skills, specifically in software testing and implementation.Experience in Microsoft Windows environments.Of those eight accomplishments in your master resume, which would you include in the resume for this position?Heres what I would pick, in order of importanceManaged 10-person technology support and development staff.ReasonThey want a manager, first and foremost. This says management experience right at the top.Organized and led regular meetings with groups of end users to discuss technology issues.Reason This addresses the requirement for communications skills with end users.Migrated 100 desktop PCs from Windows 98 to Windows XP two weeks ahead of schedule.ReasonThis indicates both project management skills and experience in Windows environments. A twoferImplemented and executed a rigorous software testing regimen to ensure compatibility with information architecture.Reason Project management, again.Initiated division-wide Green IT program to reduce utility expenses and properly dispose of unneeded technology assets.Reason This may be an extra, but if they want a manager, they want someone who can handle assets and save money. Having a social conscience cant hurt either. The three I omitted also have some importance, but thats the stuff you can save for the interview. Once youve selected the points to include, go back and tweak your wording to match their terminology, so its clear that your accomplishments fit their specific needs.

An entrepreneurs advice for women looking to start their own business
An entrepreneurs advice for women looking to start their own businessAn entrepreneurs advice for women looking to start their own businessAs a historically male position, entrepreneurship can be a very difficult undertaking for women. From developing the initial business idea to identifying potential investors to opening a business doors, men seemingly have an advantage over women in the world of starting yur own business.Still, that doesnt stop the nine 1000000 women who own companies in the U.S. from accomplishing their entrepreneurial dreams. After all, women are founding companies at a historic rate. According to USC Marshall, women-owned firms have grown by 1.5 times the rate of other small enterprises in the U.S. throughout the past fifteen years. This gives hope and provides comfort to the hundreds of women who plan to start their own companies.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreIn my own experience, its true starting and owning your own company as a woman is not easy in and of itself. So when you consider the other typical entrepreneurial setbacks, such as minimal funding, lack of experience, or fierce competitors, being a woman who starts her own business becomes that much more difficult. It simply means we have to work that much harder to elevate our companies to success. So whats the secret to success for women in these positions? While there may be no magic formula other than hard work and perseverance, here are three pieces of advice I have for any woman looking to form her own company.Focus on your self-confidence It may sound simple, but in reality, developing confidence can prove to be a very difficult endeavor. However, the most important piece of advice I give fellow female entrepreneurs is to have confidence and move quickly with your ideas. Far too often, female entrepreneurs are held back by their fear of failure, especially as it compares to their male counterpartes. That mentality can be extremely debilitating. As women, our brains oftentimes tell us we need to have a perfect business plan or product before we ask for help or engage mentors, but the truth of this is our fears have more credibility in our heads than they do in reality.A study conducted by the Anxiety and flaute Association of America found that women are twice as likely to have an anxiety disorder than a man, so the unfortunate reality is that many women have to actively work to turn off the self-deprecating thoughts that hold them back. However, its completely possible to block out these fears and maintain a sublime sense of confidence it just takes a little work sometimes.Ultimately, having confidence in yourself is extremely beneficial to entrepreneurship for a number of reasons. Primarily, it will allow one to have the courage to chase after their dreams and turn them into a reality. However, it will also help starting entrepreneurs to counter the negativity and failure that often comes with starting your own business. As previously mentioned, for women, in particular, it can be difficult to ward off negative self-talk, but to operate with an improved self-confidence can make all the difference in ones professional success.Quickly develop your networkAs a budding entrepreneur, one of the most vital contributors to your success will be the network you create. From key investors to professional mentors and more, its important to keep in mind no one is successful on their own. As you begin to develop your business idea, take a look at the network youve already created and determine who can provide you advice, support, and resources. From there, use the connections already in your network to expand upon. binnensee if those people can introduce you to others who will be beneficial to your journey. Look for individuals who have started their own companies, or someone who is particularly passionate about whatever field youre cre ating your company in. Youll find those who will be the most resourceful to you probably arent more than a degree or two away.Additionally, as a woman, networking and expanding your circle will be particularly helpful. Be sure to seek out other women who have taken similar paths or who will be able to support you throughout your journey in a number of roles. Consider joining women-focused professional groups where youll be able to quickly engage with others and expand your network. Personally, my experience in groups like these has been particularly beneficial for my career and has given me the opportunity to mentor and work with other women who are setting out on this same path.Regardless of how or with whom you build your network when youre first setting out on your entrepreneurial journey, the timeliness of this initiative will be particularly important. Dont wait long to develop your network. Instead, make this a priority from early on and be sure to put gusto behind it in order to accelerate the rate of which you build your network. By focusing on your connections and how you can mutually benefit one another, youll find a plethora of resources that will all benefit your up-and-coming business.Determine your mission Women-owned businesses take shape in a number of forms. Whether youre selling a product, starting a nonprofit, or offering a service, its important to determine your unique mission from the start. For my partner and I, when we created our company, we sought to develop something that would evolve into the most people-focused eyewear company in the world. To do this, we knew we needed to put customers, team members, and our community at the heart of our mission. People were our mission and weve let it drive us ever since.Having a concrete mission will allow female entrepreneurs to take their companies far. When you know exactly what youre doing, and why, youll find other things start to fall into place. This will also help you to develop your netw ork and entice others who are passionate about your mission as well.Setting out on to the path to entrepreneurship can be a difficult and sometimes overwhelming journey. Being a woman can further complicate that path, knowing youll have road bumps and blocks along the way that your male counterparts wont endure. However, with the help of a strong, diverse network, a concrete mission, and a heightened self-confidence, women can take part and flourish in the fruitful journey to entrepreneurship.Angie Stocklin is the COO and cofounder of One Click Ventures, an online eyewear retailer based in Greenwood, Ind.You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

To Get a Fuller Picture of a Candidate, Talk to Their Coworkers
To Get a Fuller Picture of a Candidate, Talk to Their Coworkers To Get a Fuller Picture of a Candidate, Talk to Their Coworkers Checking references after an interview has been standard hiring practice for a long time â" but what if this method fails to give hiring managers the full picture? When asked for references, most job seekers will provide lists of former bosses who can speak to their hard skills and successes. Instead of only talking to managers, it may be in the best interest of prospective employers to request more well-rounded sets of references. When giving references for former employees, managers tend to focus on task-related behaviors, such as meeting deadlines or the ability to work independently, according to a study of 20,000 job references conducted by online reference checker SkillSurvey. Meanwhile, the study showed that former coworkers focused more on interpersonal behaviors, using words like helpful, compassionate, and friendly far more often than managers. To put it bluntly, managers may be providing feedback about what a candidate provides, while the coworkers provide feedback about how they provide it, which is a more well-rounded picture, says Ray Bixler, SkillSurveys CEO and president. For example, a chief medical officer might be best able to rate a nurses level of quality of care, while the nurses colleagues might be better able to rate how the nurse candidate made the patient feel. So, coworkers are providing invaluable insights into a candidates work presence and effectiveness as a teammate, which has the potential to impact customer service, company culture, and organizational success. Getting a Complete Picture of Your Candidate It isnt difficult to get applicants to hand over well-rounded reference lists. Recruiters and hiring managers just need to be specific about what they are looking for in references when they ask for them. If employers are already requesting references from job candidates, then it may be as easy as specifically requesting one or two coworker references along with manager references, Bixler says. While the days of the personal reference remain firmly behind us due to various legal obligations, coworker references can fill that void, giving hiring managers and recruiters access to valuable information about an applicants personality and demeanor. It is really critical that references can speak to skills or behaviors they know and have observed that relate to the job the candidate is applying for, Bixler says. Its important to remember that when asking questions [to references], compliance is important, so the questions legally need to be job-specific. Given the risks of not being compliant â" as well as the price tag that comes with recruiting â" it is in an organizations best interest to thoroughly look into various types of job references. To give a better idea of what former managers and coworkers are talking about during reference checks, see these tables based on information from the SkillSurvey study: â" Just as applicants should research a companys culture and operations before taking a position, hiring managers and recruiters should research candidates to make sure they will be good fits. Getting a more well-rounded view of the candidate by talking to both former coworkers and managers is one way to accomplish that.Master the art of closing deals and making placements. Shhh! The Library is a Great Place for Job Seekers
Shhh! The Library is a Great Place for Job Seekers Shhh! The Library is a Great Place for Job Seekers Shhh! The Library is a Great Place for Job Seekers Being out of work can be stressful, frustrating, and worst of all, utterly boring. Once you've contacted all your contacts, applied to all the jobs on all the job boards, and exhausted every other avenue you can think of, what do you do with yourself? Go to the good ol' public library! It's an island of peace and tranquility that can soothe your embattled soul. And it might even open up some new ideas for the job hunt! If you're like most adults (unless you're accompanied by your school-age kids), you probably haven't been to the library since you were in school. So it may come as a surprise to you to know that most public libraries have evolved into multimedia resources extraordinaire! One thing that hasn't changed is that it's quiet at the library, which makes it one of my favorite escapes. There are books (of course), but there are also DVDs, audio books, music CDs, entrepreneurial magazines, computers with internet access, discount tickets for cultural venues, and lots more. So whether you're in the mood for an inspiring biography, a favorite old movie, or a trashy novel to take your mind off things, get thee to a library! Oh, I almost forgot the best part: Everything's FREE! Do you have any other freebies that can help job seekers fill their spare time with productive, positive activities? Leave a comment!

How to Start a Pooper Scooper Business
How to Start a Pooper Scooper Business How to Start a Pooper Scooper Business Pooper scooper businesses are one of the fastest growing pet start-up businesses options, as pet owners are increasingly demonstrating a willingness to pay for time-saving convenience services such as dog waste removal. According to a 2011-2012 survey by the American Pet Products Association, spending on pet services is projected to increase from the $3.79 billion spent in 2011 to approximately $4.11 billion in 2012. Business Considerations New pet businesses may be required to take out insurance, obtain licenses or permits, or file other paperwork with the state, city, or local governments before beginning to offer services to clients. As requirements vary widely from one place to another, it is wise to check with local government and business organizations to determine what is required in each specific area. Pooper scooper businesses may be formed as sole proprietorships or limited liability companies (LLCs), and there are various tax advantages associated with each option. Consulting a tax accountant or business advisor is advisable, as these individuals can clarify which option provides the greatest advantage to the business owner. Equipment Pooper scooper businesses have relatively low overhead costs to start up. The primary start-up cost involves the purchase of equipment such as rakes, shovels, dustpans, and trash bags. Rental of a dumpster is also a possible piece of necessary equipment if the pet waste is hauled away to an off-site location and not left in the clientâs waste receptacles. Pooper scooper businesses may also want to consider purchasing a vehicle to use for hauling waste and transporting equipment. A popular choice would be a pickup truck or van with a separate compartment to hold tools and waste. The vehicle can be customized to advertise the business using logo magnets or custom paintwork. Services Pooper scooper services are most frequently required in residential single-family homes. Waste removal services may also serve a variety of commercial accounts such as dog parks, doggie daycares, veterinary clinics, boarding kennels, an apartment or condo common areas. A pooper scooper service can either leave the bagged waste in trash cans on the customerâs property or haul it away for off-site disposal. Haul away options will have additional costs involving the fuel used to transport the waste and any possible additional disposal fees due to the landfill, sewage facility, or dumpster company. The method of disposal may be dependent on local regulations on pet waste. Other services that may be offered by pooper scooper businesses vary widely but can include the application of flea tick spray to the yard, lawn repair for yellow spots caused by pet urine, cat litter box waste removal, or the application of yard deodorizer products. Some pooper scooper businesses also offer pet sitting services or dog walking services. Pricing On average, scooper services run about $10 to 15 for one visit per week (for one dog households). Additional fees may apply for multiple dog households or for a yard that has not had waste removal services for a considerable period. Scoopers can generally cover 4 to 6 yards per hour, especially if services are offered in a defined area. Limiting services to a specific area also saves money on fuel costs. Franchise pet waste companies, such as Pet Butler, have online pricing options based on the number of dogs, the frequency of cleaning, and owners zip code. Once a week service in my area was listed as $11 for one service each week ($47.67 monthly), $17.50 for each service every other week ($37.92 monthly), and $75 for a one-time-only visit of up to 75 minutes of hard labor. Advertising Pooper scooper services can be advertised by leaving business cards and flyers at small animal vet clinics, pet stores, dog parks, doggie daycares, supermarkets, office complexes, and other areas where pet owners may congregate. Additional advertising options include taking out an ad in the phone directory, posting ads on Craigslist, creating a business web page, putting ads in local magazines and newspapers, wearing apparel that features the business logo or applying logo magnets to the sides of the pooper scooper vehicle. Referrals can also be a great source of business; word of mouth is the best advertising there is. It may be beneficial to pursue relationships with other pet businesses such as vet clinics, doggie daycares, and dog groomers; these businesses may be willing to enter into a reciprocal referral arrangement that will benefit both your business and theirs. Satisfied clients will also be a great source of referrals once your business is established.

Breaking News Bye Bye CPOL Resumix! Closing Forever on May 31, 2012
Breaking News Bye Bye CPOL Resumix! Closing Forever on May 31, 2012 Breaking News Bye Bye CPOL Resumix! Closing Forever on May 31, 2012 Breaking News: Bye Bye CPOL Resumix! Closing Forever on May 31, 2012 We are saying goodbye to CPOL, the Department of the Armyâs Civilian hiring system. The Army Civilian Personnel Online application is the last Resumix keyword automated system available to federal jobseekers. The Navy and US Marine Corps have already moved from Resumix to USA Staffing, which is a combination of USAJOBS for resume submission and ApplicationManager.gov for questionnaire submission. OFFICIAL NOTICE from the Army Civilian Resume Builder ANSWER website: ATTENTION APPLICANTS: The Army will complete its transition to the DoD Enterprise Recruitment Tool (USA Staffing) effective, 1 May 2012. USA Staffing will be the single hiring process and tool used by all DoD components. Effective, 31 May 2012, the Army Resume Builder will no longer be available. Resumes cannot be electronically transferred to USAJOBS/Application Manager. Applicants must manually extract their resume data prior to the system going off-line. Applicants are encouraged to pre-position their resume into USAJOBS to apply for Army positions. Applicants will be able to view the status of self-nominations from the old system via USAJOBS My Account Application Status. Below is a summary of the major differences between CPOL and USAJOBS for your consideration when revising your resume and applying for civilian Army jobs through USAJOBS. The Differences Between CPOL and USA Staffing Application Process CPOL: Resume Only + Self-Nomination + Documents. The CPOL Resume Builder was liked by many federal jobseekers. It is and has been the easiest and fastest way to apply for a federal job, requiring only a resume, documents, and self-nomination form. USA Staffing: USAJOBS Resume Builder + Application Manager Questionnaire + Documents (including optional cover letter). The self-assessment questionnaire was originally designed and developed by Bryan Hochstein, Founder of QuickHire, and is now the âvalid, reliable assessment toolâ that President Obama wrote about in his Hiring Reform Executive Order. The questionnaire questions will be all new for civilian Army applicants. Allow extra time to get used to the questionnaire; there could be between 15 and 60 questions per application. In addition, submitting resumes in USAJOBS will take longer than in CPOL, because one size does not fit all in USAJOBS. Applicants must be careful to ensure that resumes meet the requirements specified in EACH vacancy announcement and tailor the resume to demonstrate the necessary expertise to perform the specific duties of that job. Resume Selection CPOL: CPOL is a Resumix system in which the HR specialist and hiring supervisor would agree on 5 to 7 keywords, and resumes are electronically searched for these keywords to identify the candidates meeting the minimum qualifications for referral. Therefore, the first cut is done with an automatic keyword search. USA Staffing: The biggest myth in federal job search is that people think that the resumes in USAJOBS are read by an automated system for keywords. USAJOBS is NOT a Resumix or automated keyword resume review system. This is a human system, where the keywords are important for the resume for the human HR specialists and the supervisors to read, but there will not be automated keyword searches. In USA Staffing, the first cut is made by questionnaire scores. Give yourself all the credit that you can on the questionnaire. Your questionnaire score is added to your resume score (as determined by an HR specialist), and the combined total score will determine if you are Minimally Qualified, Qualified, or Best Qualified. Getting Set Up CPOL: Only one username, password, and profile are required. USA Staffing: Both USAJOBS and Application Manager require a user name, password, and profile to be set up separately for each system. Once they are set up, you will need to remember/record your user names, passwords, and secret questions. Vacancy Announcements CPOL: Vacancy announcements are similar in structure to the new USAJOBS vacancy announcements, but shorter in length and in general with fewer requirements detailed for applications. USA Staffing: Vacancy announcements are specific for a particular position or positions. The announcements include longer descriptions of duties; Knowledge, Skills and Abilities; specialized experience; and questionnaires. Character Counts CPOL: You are limited to 12,000 characters for all of your Work Experiences combined. The preferred resume length is 3 pages. USA Staffing: In USAJOBS, you can write up to 5,000 characters in length (including spaces) for EACH of your Work Experience job blocks. The USAJOBS resume can be longer, and the preferred resume length is 4-5 pages. Resume Format CPOL: Big Block format is the typical format in order to fit all of the necessary content into the 12,000 character allowance. USA Staffing: Now you can write 5,000 characters for each position, and there is ample space to improve your resumeâs readability for the HR specialists, which is very important. We recommend small paragraphs focusing on specific skills with accomplishments included. The KSAs in the announcement should also be covered in the resume. Keywords are still critical for the human resources specialist readers. Final Note Good luck with adjusting to the new format, and be sure to move your resume from the CPOL Resume Builder to USAJOBS.gov Resume Builder before May 31st! Go to: https://resumebuilder.cpol.army.mil/resumebuilder/builder/index.jsp Then search for army jobs at: armycivilianservice.com/

Papers Now Being Accepted for Special Journal Issue on Electro...
Papers Now Being Accepted for Special Journal Issue on Electro... Papers Now Being Accepted for Special Journal Issue on Electro... Papers Now Being Accepted for Special Journal Issue on Electrochemical Energy Storage The editorial board for the ASME Journal of Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage is currently accepting papers for a special issue of the journal, which is scheduled to be published in June 2016. The deadline to submit a paper for the special journal issue, which will cover topics related to multiphysics coupling in energy storage, is March 15, 2016. The topic of multiphysics coupling in energy storage has become increasingly significant in recent years, as automakers aspire to accelerate innovation in relation to improved energy and power performance, the safety and lifespan of energy storage devices for electric vehicles, renewable energy integration, and grid storage. Lithium-ion batteries, in particular, are leading the race for electric drive vehicles. These are complex, dynamical systems, which include a multitude of coupled physicochemical processes encompassing electronic, ionic, diffusive transport in solid/electrolyte phases, electrochemical and phase change reactions, and stress generation in multi-scale porous electrodes. The performance and resilience of these electrochemical energy storage devices is dependent on complex reaction/transport processes spanning multiple length and time scales. Computational models of mechanical, thermal and electrochemical processes play an important role in providing insight into coupled multiphysics interactions. The National Science Foundation and the ASME Advanced Energy Systems Division sponsored a special symposium at the 2015 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition to discuss these advances. Based on the outcome of this symposium, a number of areas of interest were identified. The Special Issue on Multiphysics Coupling in Energy Storage is intended to be a collection of invited review articles and contributed research articles on these subjects, which include coupling of electrochemical, thermal, and mechanical physics; chemistry-materials-transport interactions; modeling of physical processes across length scales; reduced order models; mesoscale physics of microstructure-transport-chemistry interactions; degradation processes controlling safety and lifetime; origin and evolution of safety events such as thermal runaway; and opportunities and challenges in beyond lithium-ion chemistry. This special issue will be co-edited by Partha P. Mukherjee of Texas AM University, George J. Nelson of the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and Wilson K. S. Chiu of the University of Connecticut. Papers for the Special Issue on Multiphysics Coupling in Energy Storage should be submitted by March 15 to the journals editor, Prof. Wilson K. S. Chiu, using the For more information on the ASME Journals program, visit http://journaltool.asme.org.

What You Can Do About Age Discrimination in the Workplace
What You Can Do About Age Discrimination in the Workplace What You Can Do About Age Discrimination in the Workplace Sixty-two percent of the workforce is 25-49 years old while 32 percent is 50-64 years old and 6 percent is 65 and older. âAge discrimination is everywhere. I hear more examples of age discrimination than I hear about sex discrimination, racial discrimination and every other kind put together,â writes human resources guru and Forbes contributor Liz Ryan. Ryanâs observation about age discrimination is shocking, but is it true? If this is the case, it impacts every person in the workforce, and itâs imperative to build awareness and create more inclusive environments where job candidates of all ages are truly given equal employment opportunities. A 2015 American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) study captured data from nearly 2,500 job seekers ages 45-70 as they tried to find work after they lost their employment over the course of the last five years. More than half the respondents, 51 percent, implicated age discrimination as impeding their search. Half of respondents were working at the time of the survey, and 48 percent of them were earning less at their new jobs than they were making at the jobs they left. Respondents gave multiple reasons for this; some started over professionally and moved to jobs in new industries. Some respondents accepted lower level roles than their previous jobs. Others took positions that offered fewer hours. AARPâs sample was taken during a difficult economic time, and it may not be representative of most job seekersâ experience. Still, itâs disheartening to imagine making these concessions at a stage in our careers when we will likely have garnered ample expertise and experience. Is this what we have to look forward to as we continue to mature into our professional selves, and how do we alter this sobering picture? A good first step in addressing age discrimination is to start talking about it. Diversity training usually involves recognizing and discussing the biases we harbor. When it comes to professionals in the later stages of their careers, some of the misconceptions that erroneously characterize them suggest that they work more slowly or that they are less capable of grasping evolving technologies in the workplace. If we harbor negative misconceptions about older professionals or about ourselves as we age, itâs important that we identify them for the erroneous beliefs that they are and dispel them in favor of information that is more accurate and fair. These biases are fixable intellectual impurities, misconceptions that we have to recognize before we can train them away. Recruiters and human resources professionals have often taken a strong hand in conducting diversity work. If you find that your teams are skewing young, or if you feel like there may be resistance to hiring older professionals in your corporate culture, maybe itâs time to request some professional diversity training for your group. Sometimes a professionalâs guidance helps lead necessary, but difficult conversations. There are plenty of online diversity training programs that are well-rated, and you can also find individual diversity trainers who will come in and work with your team. Creating an opportunity for managers and staff to talk about diversity helps to reaffirm your company value for pursuing a plurality of perspectives when it comes to building teams. Age diversity sometimes gets cut from this conversation. But you can help change that. Another way to create a more inclusive professional environment is to review hiring practices to ensure they donât unfairly advantage some candidates over others. Standardizing your hiring practice can help; for example, a written test may measure candidatesâ abilities in an unbiased and uniform way. This data is a useful component to add to your interview process. Government data predicts that by 2020, 25 percent of the U.S. workforce will be aged 55 or older. So this is the right time to take an honest look at age discrimination and to create cultures of tolerance where professionals of all ages can find a place. In the short term, this vital work will create more inclusive work environments that, in the future, will stand to benefit all of us.
